The sign-in page asks for your Speech is Cheap API key and expires after 10 minutes.
Tools and Prompts
The MCP server gives your assistant five tools and two prompt templates.
transcribe- Submits a public recording URL, with options for speakers, word-level timestamps, audio labels, language, private jobs, and text, SRT, VTT, or JSON output.
get_transcript- Gets the status and transcript for a job ID. Long transcripts arrive in pages.
cancel_job- Cancels a pending job.
prepare_upload- Returns an upload command for a local file up to 2 GiB. Only assistants that can run commands on the computer with the file can use it.
check_access- Confirms your API key works and lists current limits, file types, and prices.

Billing and Privacy
Jobs through MCP cost the same as direct API jobs: per minute, plus any add-ons you choose. There is no extra fee or surcharge for using MCP.
Only completed jobs are billed.
The MCP server stores your API key encrypted, along with sign-in tokens. It does not store audio files, finished transcripts, or job IDs.
A private job redacts the media URL and deletes the transcript 12 hours after it completes. Read more on our Security page.

Which AI Assistants Can Connect?
The Docs have setup guides for ChatGPT (Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, on the web) and Claude (Free with one custom connector, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise). On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds the connector first. Other clients that support remote MCP with OAuth or a Bearer header can connect too.
How Does Sign-In Work?
Your assistant opens a Speech is Cheap sign-in page that asks for your API key. Signing in means pasting the key; there is no separate login. The connection stays active as long as you use it at least once every 30 days.
Can I Transcribe a File on My Computer?
In the ChatGPT and Claude chat apps, use a public URL that downloads without sign-in. Assistants that can run commands on your computer can use prepare_upload for local files up to 2 GiB.
What If a Recording Takes Longer Than 25 Seconds?
The transcribe tool waits up to about 25 seconds. If the job is still running, it returns a job ID, and your assistant can call get_transcript to fetch the finished transcript.
How Do I Disconnect an Assistant?
Revoke its API key in the Dashboard. That ends every connection that uses the key. The Docs recommend one key per app or integration so each can be revoked alone, and you can create more keys in the Dashboard. Revocation can take a minute or more to apply.
Does MCP Cost Extra?
No. Jobs through MCP are billed at the same per-minute rates as the API, plus any add-ons you choose, and only completed jobs are billed.
